Films

Film is another strand of my practice — not separate from writing, but an extension of it into moving image, sound, and time.

My film-poems and trailers translate surrealist experiment into a cinematic form, layering text, image, and audio to create atmospheres rather than conventional narratives. Below are some examples:

Film-poems/ poem-films:

‘Days’ – This film poem was created during lockdown and features my poem ‘Stalker’ juxtaposed with the micro detail of lockdown life.

‘threads unravel, binding us’ (Part 1) –Part 1 of a three part reading of my psychonanalytic erasure-reconstruction of Julio Cortazar’s short story, House Taken Over. I narrate the poem, accompanied by a montage of images created from my photographs turned into cubomania collages.

Watch

‘threads unravel, binding us’ (Part 2) – The second part of my long poem which erases-reassembles the text of the short story House Taken Over by Julio Cortazar – as a visual poem – on a search for the truth of the two characters’ psycho-sexual connections. Images are created from my images using the surrealist technique of triptography.

‘threads unravel, binding us’ (Part 3) – The final part of my psycho-sexual reassemblage of Julio Cortazar’s short story, House Taken Over. The key is flung down the sewer, retrieved and cast away again. What is learnt?

Collaborations:

Pandemiosis: a surrealist guide to the new condition  Made in September 2021 and generated by the surrealist ‘game of definitions’, this film taps into the absurdity of pandemic living, offering an account of the principal signs and symptoms of the human disorder-adaptation, Pandemiosis. In the spirit of surrealist investigation, it responds to the jargon of the pandemic; each definition having been produced by a different poet using their own curious surrealist methodologies. The poets are Steven J. Fowler, Patrick Cosgrove, Susie Campbell, Stephen Sunderland, Georgina Hughes, Simon Tyrrell, David Spittle and Vicki Kaye. Score was created by Molly Sunderland; editing and image curation by Stephen Sunderland.
